Des Rocs: Modern Rock ’n’ Roll With Old-School Theatrics
Des Rocs, aka Daniel Rocco, raised the roof at Gebäude 9 with a blazing display of energy, confidence, and in-your-face rock ’n’ roll. His music is the perfect collision of throwback influences and modern rock, combining a heavier musical edge with the theatrical flair of rock’s good old days. It feels like a revival of classic rock ’n’ roll attitude, delivered with a contemporary twist and plenty of larger-than-life moments.
Opening with “This Land” was the perfect choice to set the mood for the night. The energetic track immediately got things moving.
For Des Rocs standing still is not really his thing. With impressive guitar work and almost constant movement, Rocco covered the stage from left to right, barely pausing for a moment. His energy was infectious, quickly spreading into the audience and setting the entire room in motion.
The crowd responded enthusiastically from the start, singing along, enjoying themselves, and matching the energy coming from the stage. What made the performance particularly entertaining was the constant interaction between Rocco and his audience. He wants participation, and he knows exactly how to get it. Throwing lines into the room, he urged the crowd to repeat his words, echo his shouts, and sing back whatever he delivered. The result was a call-and-response game that added a healthy dose of humor to the already high-energy performance.
At one point, Rocco shouted, “Go-go-go!” only for the crowd to answer, “Do-do-do.” His amused chuckle said it all before the show plunged straight back into more craziness. There was a definite touch of old-school arena-rock theatrics in the way he handled the audience. He knew when to stretch a moment, when to turn up the intensity, and when to let the crowd take over, feeding off their reactions and sending that energy straight back into the room.
Musically, the performance was just as impressive. Solos flew continuously from his custom Aviator guitar, with Rocco demonstrating his skills while simultaneously handling the vocals. Backed by a solid rhythm section consisting of drums and bass, there were no obvious backing tracks carrying the performance along; what the audience heard was produced on stage by the musicians themselves.
It was great to hear songs from his latest album performed live. Alongside the newer material, Rocco reached back into his catalogue for older favourites, including “Never Ending Moment” and “Dream Machine.”
By the end of the night, Des Rocs and his band had once again demonstrated how to deliver a compelling live show. The chemistry between the musicians was excellent, the sound was fantastic, and the energy never seemed to fade. Rocco combines the raw drive of modern rock with the showmanship of an earlier arena-rock era, making the performance as much about the connection with the audience as it is about the music itself.
Des Rocs doesn’t simply perform for the crowd; he gets the crowd involved in the performance. With plenty of guitar fireworks, theatrical flair, humor, and an infectious rock ’n’ roll attitude, he turned Tuesday night into another fantastic celebration of live music.
