Nu-metal night at E-Werk, Köln
Headliner: Future Palace
Supports: As Everything Unfolds and Luna Kills.
Future Palace took the stage at around 9:20 PM at E-Werk, playing to a crowd that filled the main floor of the venue (the balcony was closed), with a predominantly Gen Z audience.
The German post-hardcore trio draws clear inspiration from the early-2000s nu-metal and alternative rock era, particularly the sound popularized by Linkin Park. However, Future Palace have developed their own identity within the modern post-hardcore and alternative metal scene. Frontwoman Maria Lessing has openly acknowledged Linkin Park as one of her major formative influences when she discovered the emo and rock subcultures as a child. The band’s lyrics frequently explore mental health, inner conflict, toxic relationships, and emotional vulnerability.
Future Palace presented an impressive stage design built around a coordinated colour scheme, with the drum kit positioned on a raised platform to stage left. The visual concept was complemented by well-coordinated stage lighting and occasional bursts of stage steam, adding to the atmosphere throughout the performance.
The set opened with “Deep Blue” followed by “The Shades”. Lessing handled both clean and harsh vocals throughout the show, demonstrating the range required to move between melodic passages and more aggressive sections.
The live setup is built around drums, guitar, and vocals, with additional sound effects and synthesizer layers supplied by backing tracks. A pre-recorded piano track was also featured on “Tidal Waves” adding another dimension to the arrangement.
“The Echoes of Disparity” brought Charlie Rolfe back on stage for a duet, providing one of the evening’s notable moments.
Despite the relatively stripped-down instrumentation, the vocal mix occasionally struggled to cut through, with the drums somewhat dominating the overall sound.
The 18-song setlist took just over 70 minutes to complete. Throughout the performance, the audience responded enthusiastically, offering strong support and joining in on numerous singalongs, contributing to an engaging evening for the German trio.
The British band As Everything Unfolds fit comfortably within the same genre as the evening’s headliner, with Charlie Rolfe on lead vocals. The band delivered a high-energy performance over roughly 50 minutes, ensuring the crowd was well warmed up and ready for the headliner.
Luna Kills, a rising Finnish modern alternative metal band kicked off the night at 7:45 with a 30 minutes set of nu-metal and alternative rock. The band also led by a female vocalist, Lotta Ruutiainen.
The night brought three female-fronted bands from the same genre together under one roof, giving nu-metal fans a full evening of their favourite music.
