The Canadian indie-pop band Walk Off the Earth brought high-energy theatricality, rapid instrument-swapping, and a mix of viral covers and original material to Carlswerk Victoria. With the venue curtained off to around three-quarters of its capacity, approximately 1,000 people attended the Cologne show. The audience spanned an unusually wide age range, from very young children to older concertgoers. Known for their family-friendly performances and early start times, the band followed that formula in Cologne, kicking off the concert at 7 PM.

There was no shortage of musical instruments and unconventional objects used to make music on stage, and the band members made full use of them throughout the performance. Instrument-swapping was a recurring feature, with musicians frequently switching instruments even within individual songs. They also changed positions on stage, sharing instruments and rotating places, with the drummer being the only member largely tied to his drum kit. The constant movement and playful interactions demonstrated the band’s considerable showmanship, turning the performance into a visual spectacle as much as a musical one. Visually, the band presented a coordinated look, with the members dressed in matching red jumpsuits or hoodie, that added to the playful, theatrical character of the performance.

The setlist offered a broad selection of material from the band’s own repertoire, alongside reimagined covers of contemporary hits, often woven together into cleverly constructed medleys. The arrangements kept the show moving at a brisk pace while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and their ability to transform familiar songs into something distinctly their own.

About 20 minutes into the main set, The Luminati Suns joined the band for a three-song appearance. The young performers, children of Walk Off the Earth’s Gianni Luminati and Sarah Blackwood, took to the stage with their own instruments, including a small drum kit, accompanied by several members of the band. The family affair culminated in a rendition of Bedouin Soundclash’s When the Night Feels My Song, giving the youngsters their own moment in the spotlight.

After their appearance, the evening continued with Walk Off the Earth delivering songs including Superhero, Long Way Home, You Take Me Home, and My Stupid Heart, alongside yet another cleverly assembled medley. The combination of original material, inventive reinterpretations, constant instrumental changes, and family-friendly entertainment made for a lively and engaging evening in Cologne.
