Dark wave is not considered mainstream. It remains firmly rooted as a niche, underground subgenre of alternative music. You will rarely hear dark wave tracks played on commercial Top 40 radio stations, nor will you see dark wave artists topping the Billboard Hot 100. True dark wave is characterized by bleak, melancholic lyrics, minor-key synth arrangements, and often lo-fi production. These elements can be too gloomy or harsh for general commercial audiences, who tend to prefer upbeat, polished pop. Instead, the genre thrives globally through independent labels, dedicated underground clubs, and passionate subculture festivals.
Hauling from Vancouver, Canada, ACTORS are a highly popular and influential band within the dark wave, post-punk, and alternative music scenes. Their albums It Will Come to You (2018) and Acts of Worship (2021) are considered modern classics within the genre. Most recently, they released their highly anticipated third studio album, Our Love Will Live Forever, followed by an international tour. ACTORS performed live at Club Volta in Cologne, where they received strong support from the audience. While many dark wave bands rely on a flat, monotonous vocal delivery, ACTORS step outside the box with a dynamic, theatrical, and elegant vocal style heavily reminiscent of David Bowie’s art-pop sensibilities. On certain songs, U2 also emerges as a clear influence and another blueprint for their sound. Yet despite these references, ACTORS have developed a distinctive flavour of their own. The music is heavily driven by the bass-and-drums rhythm section, while the synths and guitar complement the vocals without burying them. The result is a sound that remains accessible and digestible, never drifting too far toward an overly dense or excessively dark synth-driven sound.Even those who have never heard of ACTORS can walk into one of their concerts and, within just a few songs, become immersed in their music and enjoy an absolutely memorable evening.
