The Freideck at Die Kantine was packed with a predominantly Gen Z audience on a warm July Saturday evening as Munich’s Blackout Problems took the stage at 8 PM. From the opening moments, the quartet wasted little time establishing the pace, delivering a high-energy set that immediately connected with the crowd and maintained its momentum throughout the night.
One of the evening’s standout moments came just a few songs into the set. Frontman Mario Radetzky stepped off the stage and climbed onto a low wall running alongside the venue’s main floor. For the next two songs, the audience found themselves turning 90 degrees to follow him as he performed from above the crowd, blurring the line between stage and audience and creating one of the night’s most memorable scenes.
That sense of connection defined the performance. Radetzky was in constant motion, encouraging singalongs and keeping the audience engaged, while the rest of the band matched his intensity with a tight, dynamic performance. Blackout Problems’ blend of alternative rock, post-hardcore and electronic textures translated exceptionally well live, combining heavy guitar riffs with atmospheric layers and driving rhythms without ever losing its melodic edge.
The audience responded enthusiastically throughout the evening. From jumping and clapping to singing along, the crowd remained fully invested from start to finish. Despite the open-air setting, the atmosphere felt intimate, with the Freideck taking on the energy of a packed indoor club.
The excellent sound mix ensured that every instrument remained clearly defined despite the band’s dense arrangements. The guitars retained their punch, the rhythm section stayed powerful, and Radetzky’s vocals remained crisp even during the loudest passages.
Blackout Problems once again demonstrated why they have earned a reputation as a strong live alternative rock act. Rather than relying on elaborate stage production, they let their songs, musicianship and genuine connection with the audience carry the show, resulting in an engaging and memorable performance that was a fitting highlight of a warm summer evening in Cologne.
